As in most rural communities Fernley offers both a safe and low crime environment.. The Lyon County Sherriff's Department (LCSD) is active in the business community and private sector offering many programs and protecting the community.

The Fernley Volunteer Fire Department and teams of full time paramedics and ambulances offer high levels of service in the event of an emergency. Fernley's active Senior Center is open daily. They provide senior transportation service to and from various appointments and also provide other programs and services specifically designed for older citizens.

The Lyon County School District services the students and families in Fernley. Parent and community involvement is high in local schools.

Quality education follows a comprehensive curriculum and a safe, drug free learning environment is offered to children pre-school through high school.

Fernley has three elementary schools, an intermediate school, and one high school. Fernley is near two community colleges, Western Nevada Community College (WNCC) and Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) and just an hour from the University of Nevada Reno (UNR), home of the WolfPack Football, Baseball and Basketball. Nevada's University and Community College System includes world renowned researchers, Pulitzer Prize winners and are consistently acknowledged as some of the best schools in the nation. The system touches all parts of the state with community colleges and satellite offices in rural Nevada.
